Week 5 of Pregnancy

Your baby is now called an embryo and about the size of an apple seed. You will be able to use a home pregnancy to confirm that you are really pregnant. Your baby's heart will beat for the first time during this week.

Changes in your body at Week 5 of Pregnancy

Some of the symptoms you might incur during the 5th week of pregnancy are below, however these symptoms vary in intensity from woman to woman, and also from pregnancy to pregnancy in the same woman:

  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Hunger
  • Nausea
  • Morning sickness
  • Increased vaginal secretions
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches due to the rise in hormones.

Baby's Development at Week 5 of Pregnancy - Baby size: 5 to 7mm

This week your baby’s heart will beat for the first time due to the baby’s blood vessels circuits developing. The embryo up until this point has been a mass of cells, but from week 5 a distinct shape begins to form which can be seen in a transvaginal ultrasound scan as can the motion of the baby’s heart beat.  The circulatory system is the first functioning organ system of the baby. Also around this week the nervous system begins to develop as does the baby’s muscles and bones. The three parts of the brain will also start to emerge.
