Week 8 of Pregnancy

Around week 8 your baby's gonads will become either testes or ovaries determining the sex of the baby. The baby will start spontaneous movement and weighs about 0.1 ounce.

Changes in your body at Week 8 of Pregnancy


Your uterus is now the size of an orange which will explain your expanding waistline. Pregnancy symptoms that some women experience during this time include:
  • Acne
  • Nausea
  • Excess saliva
  • Hormone increase
  • Tender or swollen breasts

Baby's Development at Week 8 of Pregnancy - Baby size: 3.0cm


During this period of pregnancy your baby’s heart should be fully developed and be pumping at approximately 150 beats a minute.  The baby will also develop webbed fingers and toes at this stage.

Changes occurring to the baby at this time include: 

  • Leg buds divide into thigh, leg, and foot units
  • The arm buds divide into hand, arm, elbow, and shoulder units
  • The arms and legs move
  • Cartilage and bones begin to form
  • Eyelids begin to form
  • Ears, upper lip, and tip of the nose develop
  • Intestines grow so long that they start protruding into the umbilical cord
  • Teeth develop under the gums
  • The testes or ovaries are forming
